Great Price "Lucky One : Making It Past Polio and Despair" for $6.95 Today

In 1947, I had Polio. I was taken to Los Angeles County Hospital, then to Childrens Hospital. This book by Richard Maus was wonderfully confirming; a satisfying read because his experience was in keeping with my own experience. Attitudes imparted by medical staff, parental perspectives and response were similar, although we were in different parts of the country.
The nightmare of repeated surgeries! The stigma of this tragic disease! Richard Maus writes clearly and precisely what we "polios" experienced.
I realize that the medical community has progressed and parents in the 1940's and 50's themselves felt so entirely helpless at the time of onset. They were stunned and grieved. They believed the medical community knew best. When in fact, we were often human guinea pigs.
My memory, it turns out, serves me well. I appreciate this book and the candid way in which Richard Maus shared his story. However, I could not write a book about having polio without including the fact that the L-rd G-d saved my life and gave me spirit!

What Was I Thinking? - Nilsa - Maine
I'm really dependent on the reviews here at Amazon when I select a book, so I don't know why I ordered this book when there were no reviews. Perhaps I can save others some money by saying that there are far better books on knee pain than this one. I actually found more information by doing a Google search for "knee pain". The section on exercise, which in the one part of the book which should be most relevent, is no more than a few pages long. The author lists several exercises in brief, and there are no photos or illustrations to show the exercises. Even stranger, there are NO stretches. I find it hard to understand how this book even came to be published. I wish that I'd been able to go to a bookstore to compare books and select the one that best met my needs, but thankfully I ordered "Knee Pain" by John Garrett, MD, at the same time that I ordered "The Knee Sourcebook" . It has two full chapters on exercises with photos, shows stretches, and has a full variety of exercises to strengthen all the muscles surrounding and supporting the knee.

Because She's My Friend by Harriet Sirof is a wonderful book, and is filled with incidents that are easy to relate to.
When 14-year old Teresa D'Angelo first begins to volunteer at the hospital, she doesn't plan on having a good summer. That is, until she meets the interesting girl in room 725. With her horrendous mood swings, awful language, and terrible attitude, Valerie Ross is hardly your average patient. Valerie's right leg is paralyzed after falling off a ladder. Yet it isn't until she leaves the hospital that the problems really start. Valerie is already in a permanent bad mood because the operation performed to fix her leg didn't work.
After she leaves the hospital and goes home, she goes to physical therapy once a week, and then eventually leaves her tutor to go back to school. Eventually, she starts to imagine that her left leg is also paralyzed, and that soon her whole body will become paralyzed until she can only blink. Tests are run and come back negative for her left leg or anything else being paralyzed.
Valerie is eventually placed in a sanatorium after being diagnosed with depression and conversion hysteria. Teri, her closest, and now only, friend comes to visit her often.
1. Yet, Valerie isn't the only one in this book with a story to tell. Teri is trying to cope with her new baby brother, her sister leaving for college, school, the hospital, and her principal. She also discovers that sometimes in life you have to go out of your comfort zone to help those that are closest to you, and need you the most.
I would recommend this book to anybody who understands trust, strength, and what true friendship is really about.

I am writing this on behalf of my husband who had Polio at the age of 7. His was non-crippling at the time and he came out of it with just a slight limp in one leg. In his early 40's he began to have unexplained symptoms, pain, muscle spasms, drawing in his legs, etc. As his ability to walk worsened, we sought help from several Neurologists as well as a Orthopedic specialist with no results~~~just tons of medicine. We told each specialist about his polio and could he possibly have Post Polio Syndrome~~~we were told there was no such thing.
While searching the internet for help, I came across Dr. Bruno's book and immediately went to Amazon to purchase it. We have since been directed to a specialist in our area for Post Polio Syndrome and feel, at last, he is going to get help. We realize there is no cure, but it is such a relief to finally be told there is such a thing as PPS and everything that can be done to make his life easier, will be done.
We highly recommend this book to anyone who may be a Polio survivor and beginning to experience symptoms. Don't wait as long as we did to find help~~~it is definitely out there!!

Reading this book I felt like someone had entered my life and could see my thoughts and frustrations. It was strange. It is so true- we were taught avoidance of the issue.As a nurse I learned about polio in the past tense, and had read few articles on PPS. I had seen polio survivors, even gone to school with a couple but never talked to them and when problems started did not even know who to talk to.
Dr. Bruno covers just about every physical and emotional aspect-- now if I can just retrain myself to take care of me.
I was able to go to the Clinic and meet with Dr. Bruno and he is as genuine in person as he seems in the book. All the built up anxiety came tumbling out in a rush-- because this book showed he has pulse on my life as a post polio patient and seemed to CARE!!.
I think this book should be required reading for all in the medical field.
